YOLO: Thrill Seekers Welcome
Some travelers like to take it easy and find quiet and relaxing spots to spend their time on the road. For others who prefer the complete opposite, there are many ways in the Chicago Southland to tap into your inner adrenaline junkie.
Satisfy that need for speed at Accelerate Indoor Speedway & Events in Mokena. Indoor electric high-speed go-karts will provide a thrill like no other. Get a taste of what it’s like to be a Formula-1 racer. There’s even a junior track for kids who are at least age 8 and 48-inches tall. While you recover from your thrill ride, you can scale back the action just a bit in the arcade and then relax with craft beer and upscale bar food in the Victory Lap Bar & Grill. In 2019, axe-throwing was added to the available activities.
If you’re a big thrill-seeker, you can get your heart pumping on the Chicago Southland’s outdoor paintball fields. In Crete, you’ll find more outdoor paintball fun at the Badlandz Paintball Field. Rent all the equipment you’ll need and make your way out for some open play sessions. If you’re an ultra-serious paintballer, get in on the NXL Paintball Chicago Open held at Chicago Gaelic Park in Oak Forest.
Big Marsh Bike Park is a recreation park for those who don’t settle for a leisurely bike ride down a flat, even path. Serious riders hit the park to check out the rugged trails and the excitement of hills and ramps. Competitive racing takes place during the season at this cycling playground, which is fun to witness as a spectator. This local and regional venue boasts an innovative design for some intense rides.
For the coolest team-building exercise ever, sign up your group for a customized program at the 38-acre Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center in Olympia Fields for some confidence-boosting, physically challenging high-ropes courses, wall climbing and crate stacking.
Get a group together and register to be part of the Blue Island Dragon Boat Festival in Blue Island on the first Saturday in June. Twenty paddlers per boat race head-to-head with the competition. Even if you don’t take part, it is quite thrilling as a spectator as well. The event has expanded to include a vendor village, music and a lively after-party with local flavors and craft beer.
Looking for a physical activity that will really provide a rush? Get in on an axe-throwing class at Riley’s Fitness and Fun Zone in Homewood. It’s quite the exhilarating experience! Parties can be reserved for up to 15, and there’s also a private karaoke room and a Big Jenga game area. You can also spend time on the target range at Eagle Sports Range. This state-of-the-art range can accommodate beginners up to expert marksmen and is fully air-conditioned.
