Firefighter Combat Challenge Returns to the Chicago Southland
By Blog Article published May 08, 2018
Lansing, Ill. – Are you ready to accept the challenge? Friday, May 4 – 5, 2018 the Scott Safety Firefighter Combat Challenge is coming to the Chicago Southland! The coordinated efforts of the Tinley Park Fire Department Firefighter's Association and Village of Tinley Park are what brought back this exciting community-minded event. The Firefighter Challenge seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession's rigors to the public. Pairs of competitors race head-to-head wearing "full bunker gear" and the Scott 5.5 Air-Pak breathing apparatus, as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting. They will be performing a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. "victim" as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock.
The Kid's Firefighter Challenge (KFC) is the logical extension of these efforts in showcasing the American Fire Service, while at the same time promoting physical fitness. Positioned near the adult version, or held coincidental with fire safety education programs, the Kid's Firefighter Challenge provides a tangible method of capturing the enthusiasm of children and channeling it in a positive direction.
“This is a fantastic way to learn about our first responders all while promoting a community event that teaches safety and fitness, it’s a win, win,” said Jim Garrett, President / CEO for the Chicago Southland Convention & Visitors Bureau.
