Animal Encounters
Travel Inspiration
If you love creatures that are four-legged or furry or ones that spread their wings to fly or have scales, there are a number of animal-related attractions and events in the Chicago Southland to explore.
Brookfield Zoo Chicago (Brookfield)
Since 1934, Brookfield Zoo Chicago has been raising and nurturing an array of animal species and educating visitors on their habitats and behaviors. Today, it houses about 450 species of animals on over 200 acres.
Sand Ridge Nature Center (South Holland)
While walking trails in this natural setting, you’re sure to spot wildlife of some kind, but you can also check out the interactive exhibits that feature some of their wildlife ambassadors - fish, snakes, turtles, birds of prey and more.
Engage in a day of wholesome fun on a leisurely self-guided tour of this Palos Park farm. Barn animals include ducks, chickens, donkeys, rabbits, turkeys and more.
Plum Creek Nature Center (Beecher)
With a bird-viewing observation area and trails, this is a perfect spot for birdwatchers. You can also get an up-close look at some animals in the exhibits, from species native to the region to a blue-tongued skink that is native to Australia. Don’t miss the annual Hummingbird Fest dedicated to these delicate winged wonders.
Horseback Riding Stables
If you want to spend some time horseback riding or hanging out with some ponies, there are a few options, including Palos Hills Riding Stables and South Suburban Ranch in Homewood. If you have your own horse, you’ll find horse-friendly trails within the Forest Preserves of Cook County and the Forest Preserve District of Will County.
A number of pet walks and events take place in the area each year, including Homer Glen’s Pet Fest, which includes a pet parade and contests for Best Costume and Best Trick along with food trucks and pet-related vendors.
