how to spend 48 hours in the chicago southland this summer if you are a foodie
If you love to eat, you’re in the right place! The Chicago Southland has such a large variety of eateries - from casual to carry-out to fine dining - representing a number of different cultures and cuisines. Need to craft a delicious itinerary for a two-ish day foodie getaway? This will get you started:
Where should I go if I want a Chicago Dog?
Check out the Hot Diggity Dog Pass where you’ll find a list of nearly 40 different places in the Chicago Southland to get a delicious dog. You can even try out multiple places and check in to earn swag. Make a hot dog your lunch stop on day #1.
Where can I get a good dessert?
After your hot dog lunch, make your way over to Gayety’s Chocolates & Ice Cream in Lansing for a decadent ice cream sundae or shake made with real ice cream, fresh ingredients and homemade whipped cream. Be sure to also grab a box of chocolates as a foodie souvenir.
Where should I walk off some calories?
Find spacious trails along the Pennsy Greenway where you can walk through a number of communities on former railways, taking you through shady forested areas, open prairies and charming downtown districts.
Where should I stay?
Spend night #1 at Windcreek Chicago Southland Casino and Resort where you can spend time trying your luck onto casino floor and enjoy an incredibly high-end meal at Alto. A concept by celebrity chef Fabio Viviani, you’ll be wowed by the steak and seafood options and also by the views. If you didn’t think you could have an amazing view the Chicago skyline from the south suburbs, you have to make your way to Alto to see it for yourself.
On night #2, lay your head down at LaBanque Hotel, a charming boutique hotel with an interesting history that is carried through the property. Stylish, sophisticated and comfortable, it gives luxury vibes in a classic downtown setting and is just steps away from Metra tracks that can deliver you to Chicago in about an hour with no driving or parking hassles. Visit the bar at the on-site restaurant, 69 Prime, for mid-week Happy Hour before heading out on the town for dinner.
Where can I get a good breakfast?
Get some delicious morning meals at Grady’s Snack N' Dine, a nostalgic American diner that is a blast from the past. Serving up breakfast classics, like sweet stacks of pancakes, protein packed bacon and egg meals and veggie-filled omeletes, you’ll find plenty of options, no matter what you are in the mood for.
How do I get the pizza that the Pope loves?
Make lunch plans to visit the Aurelio’s flagship location. This massive pizzeria is the world’s largest with a seating capacity of 650. It’s also a favorite of The Pope. Stop and sit in the area where the Pope last visited and have one of their signature Poperoni pizzas made with traditional and cupped sausage.
How should I spend some downtime between meals?
Explore the Richard Haas Murals in downtown Homewood. You’ll be amazed by how realistic this series of illusion murals are - with a design that appears in 3D. Then visit one of three Marcus Theatres in the area to soak in some air conditioning and nosh on some popcorn while you watch a newly-released flick.
Where can I have dinner in a unique space?
In downtown Flossmoor, you can dine in a former railroad station that is now a restaurant and brewery. Plan for dinner at Flossmoor Station Restaurant and Brewery for some casual bites and a pint on the patio near a historic caboose.
What about a late-night drink and music?
Take in some speakeasy vibes at the Copper Still Martini Lounge where you can sip on creative cocktails and listen to some live music.
Where can I have a tasty brunch before I head home?
Hit the Harvest Room, which has a variety of farm-to-table cuisine as well as specialties that are gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan. Sip on a hand-crafted tea or go for a mimosa, Bloody Mary, espresso martini or mocktail.
I’d like to end to the trip with a toast to foodie adventures. Where’s a fun place to do that?
Trail’s Edge Brewing is located in historic downtown Frankfort. Enjoy a craft brew. And after you’ve said “Cheers!” Take a little walk to discover some adorable boutiques and shops.
I want a nice photo to remember the trip. Where will I find a nice backdrop?
Finally, snap some selfies in front of the waterfall of some bright greenery at Lake Katherine Nature Center. If you want to linger a bit, bring a fishing pole and throw a line in.
***Summer Tip: check our online calendar for free events in the area. During the summer, you just might be able to find a free outdoor concert, farmers market or cruise night to enjoy.
