Roaring and Pouring
Travel Inspiration
Take a step back in time to the Roaring 1920s, when flappers danced the Charleston, jazz icons like Louis Armstrong ruled the phonograph, and the country’s best drinks were hidden away behind closed doors. Discover a handful of Chicago Southland’s bars with true speakeasy-style secrets or clandestine charm, where the password is adventure.
In Thornton, you’ll find two local spots that bring the speakeasy spirit to life. The Quarry Ballroom (121 South Williams Street, Thornton) is an unassuming restaurant, bar and entertainment space with a thrilling secret in the basement. Head down a short flight of stairs, and you’ll find yourself within the limestone walls of The Quarry Ballroom’s hidden speakeasy. This one-of-a-kind venue is available to rent for private parties, where the dim lighting, vintage décor and handcrafted drinks make every visit unforgettable.
Thornton Distilling Co. (400 East Margaret Street, Thornton) is located within the oldest standing brewery in Illinois, built in 1857. During Prohibition, this spot was the infamous Al Capone’s largest bootlegging facility, perfect for those seeking a cocktail of history, mystery and, well, cocktails! While visiting this local gem, be sure to book a tour to learn about 150 years of history and enjoy an opportunity to sample Thornton Distilling Co.’s artisan spirits.
Jump into your Ford Model T and head on over to Homewood, where Copper Still Martini Lounge & Speakeasy (1961 Ridge Road, Homewood) resides. This elegant cocktail lounge and eatery hosts live entertainment, martini-making classes and themed parties. If you can find it, head “Under the Still” to the Blind Tiger speakeasy, where classic cocktails and vintage charm await.
If the boys in blue are on your tail, head south to Edwin’s Roadhouse, aka Miami Gardens (31851 IL-50, Peotone). This historic bar has been open since 1929 and originally functioned as one of Al Capone’s Prohibition-era speakeasies. Today, much of the original interior remains intact, along with modern additions like pool tables and gaming machines. Don’t miss Gangster Hall, where Mr. Capone himself would enjoy meals in his private booth.
