Signature Golf Holes
Travel Inspiration
There are many dynamic holes throughout the 30 public golf courses in the Chicago Southland. Multi-contoured greens, testing hazard placements and creatively designed bunkers are common whether a three-shot par 5, drivable par 4 or quaint par 3. The variety among the 600+ holes in the region provides a mix that keeps golfers coming back. These are some of the signature holes available to the public.
Cog Hill Golf & Country Club – Dubsdread (Course No. 4)
12294 Archer Avenue, Palos Park
Hole: 16
Par: 4
Men’s Tees (Yards): Black 523, Gold 419, Blue 381, White 362, Green 359
Men’s Handicap: 10
Women’s Tee (Yards): Red (Forward) 342
Women’s Handicap: 10
Known as one of the more difficult par fours in Illinois, Dubsdread’s 16th demands two superb shots to reach the green in regulation. The fairway slopes up and left, wrapping around a ravine with two imposing right fairway bunkers at the dogleg. The green is surrounded with trouble: frontside bunkers to the left and right and the ravine extending behind. Aggressive and accurate tee shots are rewarded with shorter clubs into the green. This risk-reward gem was Cog Hill’s most pivotal hole for PGA Tour players when it hosted the Western Open and BMW Championship from 1991-2011.
Fountain Hills Golf Club
12601 Kedzie Avenue, Alsip
Hole: 9
Par: 4
Men’s Tees (Yards): Blue 340, White 319, Green 298
Men’s Handicap: 2
Women’s Tee (Yards): Red 298
Junior Tees: 200
Women’s Handicap: 2
The closing hole of Fountain Hills Golf Club’s nine-hole course is its most picturesque, featuring an 80-yard-long fairway bunker slivering up the right of the fairway. A good tee shot is crucial to attack a green hugged by a lake to the left.
Glenwoodie Golf Club
19301 State Street, Glenwood
Hole: 16
Par: 4
Men’s Tees (Yards): Black 467, Blue 420
Men’s Handicap: 1
Women’s Tee (Yards): Red 369
Women’s Handicap: 1An elevated green is perches beyond the valleyed stream, needing a full carry and extra club to reach and hold the putting service. Out of bounds runs up the right side, so the tee shot is no cupcake, either. This beast of a hole is regularly ranked as one of the Chicagoland’s most difficult, making par or birdie that much more satisfying.
Prairie Bluff Public Golf Club
19433 Renwick Road, Crest Hill
Hole: 14
Par: 4
Men’s Tees (Yards): Gold 378, Blue 362, White 340
Men’s Handicap: 12
Women’s Tee (Yards): Red 272
Women’s Handicap: 12
The daunting dogleg left par 4 carves a wide fairway along a left-side lake in play for both the tee shot and approach. The green slopes back to front, with the lone, right greenside bunker being a common miss.
Ravisloe Golf Club
18231 South Park Avenue, Homewood
Hole: 4
Par: 3
Men’s Tees (Yards): Black 181, Silver 150
Men’s Handicap: 13
Women’s Tee (Yards): Gold 140
Women’s Handicap: 13
This hole requires an accurate, long iron tee shot to a narrow elevated and undulating green with closely pinched deep bunkers on each side. Up and downs are hard to come by. Par is a good score any day regardless of skill level.
Silver Lake Country Club
14700 South 82nd Avenue, Orland Park
Hole: 8 (South Course)
Par: 4
Men’s Tees (Yards): Blue 417, White 390, Gold 300
Men’s Handicap: 3
Women’s Tee (Yards): Red 300
Women’s Handicap: 3
Approach shots must carry the course’s namesake—Silver Lake—to reach the green. Four greenside bunkers cover much of the perimeter.
University Park Golf Club
23520 South Crawford Avenue, University Park
Hole: 16
Par: 5
Men’s Tees (Yards): Black 623, Gold 600, Silver 532
Men’s Handicap: 2
Women’s Tees (Yards): Bronze 488
Women’s Handicap: 2Prevailing southwesterly winds can make this slivering par 5 a marathon. Long hitters can often have mid-to-long irons for their third shots.
