This cemetery, which has been in existence since 1920, is the burial site for the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, founder of the Nation of Islam; Fred "Duke" Slater, the first African American elected to the National Football Hall of Fame; Dr. Charles Gavin, the first African American admitted to the National College of Orthopedic Surgeons and Major Nijon Taylor, the world's fastest bicycle racer at the end of the nineteenth century and many other notable African Americans.
