10 Things to Love About Brookfield Zoo Chicago

For nearly a century, Brookfield Zoo Chicago has been a beloved destination for families, animal lovers and curious minds across Chicagoland and beyond. Known for its pioneering work in animal care, conservation and education, the zoo offers far more than just a walk among the exhibits. From sky-high Ferris wheel views to hands-on play zones to seasonal celebrations and up-close encounters with dolphins and butterflies, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a lifelong fan, here are 10 reasons why Brookfield Zoo should be on your must-visit list this year.
1) The History
Brookfield Zoo Chicago dates back more than 90 years to its opening in 1934. It quickly earned a reputation for being a leader in animal care and conservation of the natural world and continues to educate and inspire visitors to better care for wildlife and its ecosystems.
2) Ferris Wheel
Take a ride on this massive sky wheel that measures 110’ feet in height with gondolas that can seat up to six riders. It rotates over 2 1/2 times per minute and offers a lovely view of the zoo grounds.
3) Free Admission Opportunities
Several suburban and Chicago libraries have passes that can be checked out with your library card that allow for up to four complimentary admission passes. Check to see if your local library is a participant!
4) Seasonal Events
Throughout the year, there are a number of ways to experience the zoo in different ways related to the time of year. Boo! at the Zoo and Holiday Magic events welcome thousands to see the zoo in a different light and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
5) The Hamill Family Play Zoo
Opened in 2001, the Hamill Family Play Zoo is designed for a child and their adults to play and learn together. This innovative exhibit offers hands-on experiences and activities, from scavenger hunts to crafts to special Zoo Chats. It’s an interactive opportunity to bring visitors closer to the species that call the zoo home
6) Mobile App
The zoo has launched a mobile app on iOS and Android that featured a GPS-enabled way finding map, list of daily activities, links to purchase tickets, digital membership cards and more.
7) Dolphin Show
The daily dolphin shows are a popular part of the day at the zoo. Make time for the scheduled 11:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. tours in the Seven Seas to see these incredible creatures move majestically with cues from skilled trainers.
8) Motor Safari
The zoo spans a large area, and it can be a challenge to get in everything you want to see in a day. Use the Motor Safari to cover ground more quickly and to hear narration about the zoo habitats and conservation efforts along the way.
9) Butterfies!
Be sure to stop and visit the butterfly enclosure where you will discover some of nature’s most colorful creatures. Observe species native to North America as they fly around the garden and pond.
10) Splash Pad
If you’re visiting between Memorial Day and Labor Day and looking to cool off, stop in the Living Coast to cool off via the misters and splash pad.
