Chicago Southland Chorale Group Headed to Carnegie Hall

The South Holland Master Chorale (SHMC), a group that dates back to the 1970s, will have an opportunity to display their talent later this spring on the country’s most prestigious stage, Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Founded by the late J. Albert Kindig at what was then Thornton Junior College, the group later became the South Suburban Chorale. Currently under the leadership of Philip Bauman, the SHMC has around 80 singers, drawing from more than 40 communities in Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana.
The group will travel to New York to perform on Sunday, June 8 at 2 pm in the Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall. The concert will feature two works, the Faure Requiem and the Missatango by Martín Palmeri.
This is not the first time the SHMC has been considered for the honor. A 2023 concert caught the attention of the Director of Development for Distinguished Concerts International in New York (DCINY). The SHMC was selected to perform at that time but were unable to accept the invitation due to a scheduling conflict.
Other choirs that will be part of the performance hail from as far as Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Thirty-eight of the SHMC members will be participating, all of them volunteers.
There will be two opportunities to see the SMHC locally before their trip to New York. They’ll perform May 18 at Thorn Creek Reformed Church in South Holland and on June 1 at St. John the Evangelist in St. John. For more information, visit southhollandmasterchorale.org.
