the dog days of summer

Gobble Dogs, HomewoodThe dog days of summer have officially arrived! Historically recognized as the sweltering stretch between July 3 and August 11, the “dog days” have been associated with the hottest, most humid weeks of the year since Ancient Greece. Here in the Chicago Southland, though, we’re embracing the season instead of hiding from the heat. From ice-cold drinks and pet-friendly patios to scenic parks and some of the best local hot dogs around, there’s no shortage of ways to make the most of summer. Whether you’re treating your four-legged friend to a day out or searching for your next favorite hot dog stand, we’ve rounded up the perfect spots to celebrate the dog days of summer.

Hot dogs are one of the many iconic foods that have helped put Chicago on the culinary map, and no visit is complete without trying a classic Chicago-style dog. Order yours like a local: an all-beef hot dog nestled in a poppy seed bun and topped with mustard, relish, chopped onions, tomato, pickle, sport peppers and celery salt. While tradition says to skip the ketchup, we won’t judge if you ask for it!

The Chicago Southland is home to plenty of spots serving up this savory staple, from longtime neighborhood institutions to hidden gems.

Ready to turn your hot dog hunt into an adventure? The Chicago Southland Hot Diggity Dog Pass makes it easy to explore nearly 40 participating hot dog restaurants and stands throughout the region. This free mobile passport lets you check in at locations, earn points, and redeem them for fun Chicago Southland swag. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Chicago-style dogs or looking to discover a new favorite spot, the Hot Diggity Dog Pass is the perfect way to savor your way through the Southland this summer.

Few names are more synonymous with Chicago-style hot dogs than Portillo’s. With multiple locations across the Chicago Southland (Crestwood, Homewood and Summit), it’s a must-stop for visitors experiencing this local classic for the first time and a longtime staple for residents craving a taste of home. Plus, your dog can rep their dogs with Portillo’s pet accessories, including leashes and bandanas. Not in the mood for a hot dog? Try one of their equally famous Italian beef or sausage sandwiches!

Another Chicago Southland favorite is Boz Hot Dogs, with locations in Lansing, Steger and Thornton. Family-owned and operated since 1969, Boz has built a loyal customer base by serving fresh fast-food favorites with a hometown feel. Burgers, beef and, of course, hot dogs are all on the menu, along with a variety of tasty sides like nachos, onion rings and “bozitos,” a loaded snack featuring chips, chili and cheese.

The dogs don’t stop there! Plenty of beloved local spots are serving up their own takes on the classic Chicago hot dog, including Joey’s Red Hots, Gobble Dogs and Pop’s Italian Beef.

A member of the Vienna Beef Hall of Fame, Joey’s Red Hots has earned a reputation for serving quality Chicago-style favorites with locations in Justice, Orland Hills, Orland Park and Riverdale. Looking for something a little different? Gobble Dogs puts a unique spin on the classic by offering turkey dogs alongside traditional favorites. And at and of the five local Pop’s Italian Beef locations, you can enjoy another Chicago staple alongside your dog: their famous Italian beef sandwiches, a Southland tradition since opening in 1980.

Of course, the dog days of summer wouldn’t be complete without the other kind of dogs! After grabbing a classic meal, treat your four-legged companions to some summer fun of their own. From pet-friendly patios to outdoor adventures, the Chicago Southland has plenty of places where pups are welcome.

Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery celebrates the season with its aptly named annual Dog Days of Summer event on its famous Caboose deck. Enjoy an ice-cold craft beer and a delicious meal while your pup gets spoiled with complimentary dog treats. It’s the perfect place to kick back, enjoy the summer weather and make memories with your best friend. Mark your calendar for Dog Days, happening every Thursday evening through September 3.

On August 14, visit Heritage Park (14240 West 151st Street) in Homer Glen for the Tails and Treats edition of Food Truck Friday. Enjoy a variety of food trucks, entertainment and family-friendly activities while spending the evening with your favorite people—and pets!

Keep the summer fun alive into the fall with Pooch-A-Palooza on October 10 in Firemen’s Park (5218 West Court Street, Monee). Meet rescue dogs, browse pet-related vendors, enter contests and raffles, and rock out with a live DJ!

Whether you’re chasing down the perfect Chicago-style hot dog or making memories with your pup, the Chicago Southland has plenty of ways to enjoy the dog days of summer.
