cozy up with comfort food in the chicago southland

Each November, folks can usually be sorted into one of two categories: the ones stressing over mile-long grocery lists in an attempt to master grandma’s famous stuffing recipe, and the ones sitting back and letting someone else handle the cooking. While we support our culinary magicians, we also fully endorse the latter group! After all, there is an abundance of incredible restaurants throughout the Chicago Southland serving up top-tier food year-round.

With sweater weather officially here, now’s the perfect time to indulge in a little comfort food. And while Thanksgiving may be the main event this month, there’s no need to wait for a designated Thursday to treat yourself to a feast! Before the holiday madness officially takes over, abandon that shopping cart and pull up a chair at one of these cozy comfort food staples.

Chuck’s Southern Comforts Cafe (6501 West 79th Street, Burbank)

When “comfort” is literally your middle name, expectations are high, and Chuck’s Southern Comforts Cafe delivers every time! For over 20 years, the local eatery has specialized in the kind of “stick-to-your-ribs” cooking that the season calls for. Regular menu options include Cajun classics like jambalaya and catfish dinners, along with Chuck’s specialty dishes like chicken enchiladas or BBQ ribs.

If you’re looking for holiday plans, head to Chuck’s on November 26 for their Thanksgiving buffet. Enjoy a large selection of dishes ranging from savory to sweet and back again, including smoked meats, candied sweet potatoes, mac n’ cheese, apple cobbler, pumpkin cheesecake parfaits, habanero corn chowder and much more for $48/person. Reservations are required! Prefer to host at home? Indulge in Chuck’s Thanksgiving catering, with three package options available (72-hour notice required).

Country House Restaurant (5400 West 127th Street, Alsip)

Nothing says classic comfort quite like a traditional American family diner with recipes made from scratch. For over 30 years, Country House Restaurant has been serving hearty dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With a generous comfort food selection, Country House is the perfect spot to enjoy a home-cooked meal without having to wait until Turkey Day to indulge.

No matter what day of the year, you can satisfy that holiday craving with their homemade turkey dinner, served on sliced bread with soup or salad, mashed potatoes and gravy, and an additional side of your choice. Other options include Yankee pot roast, Cedar Falls pork chops or liver and onions.

Darlene’s (8888 West 159th Street, Orland Park)

Comfort food isn’t reserved just for dinnertime! Save room for a pre-Black Friday breakfast fuel up at Darlene’s. Sample one of the “OGs of brunch,” like French toast or biscuits and gravy, or try a sweet flight of Belgian waffles, each served with Darlene’s house sweet cream cheese, and topped off with flavors like blueberry bonanza or coconut chocolate decadence.

More hearty options include house bowls, like the Barcelona, featuring birria, pickled onions, Oaxaca cheese, bravas sauce, roasted potatoes, fried eggs and garlic aioli, or the Lumberjack, packed with sausage, bacon, ham, onions, green peppers, pepperjack cheese, bacon jam, roasted potatoes and fried eggs. Veggie and gluten-free meal options are also available, making Darlene’s the perfect spot for the whole family.

Hidden Manna Cafe (3613 216th Street, Suite 1, Matteson)

If your definition of comfort food includes étouffée, fried green tomatoes or smothered pork chops, Hidden Manna Cafe belongs at the top of your “must try” list. Dodge the kitchen chaos this Thanksgiving and outsource your holiday spread with delicacies like shrimp and grits, Cajun mac n’ cheese, crispy catfish and seasoned greens. Finish up your feast with peach cobbler or carrot cake, and your guests are guaranteed to leave stuffed and satisfied, minus the mountain of dirty dishes for you!

Lynnie Ques Airport Bar & Grill (3249 Airport Drive/Glenwood-Lansing Road, Lansing)

Searching for some honest-to-goodness comfort to survive the chill? Fly over to Lynnie Ques Airport Bar & Grill in Lansing. You can’t go wrong with their famous BBQ meatloaf or hickory-smoked classics like tender rib pieces, brisket or pulled pork paired with scratch-made sides like pepperjack mac, homemade chili or chicken dumpling soup. And if you’re feeding an army of your football-watching family over Thanksgiving weekend, grab some slow-smoked meats by the pound or pick up party trays of BBQ meatballs and sides to make holiday entertaining completely stress-free.

Mitchell & Michael’s Plat du Jour (18031 Dixie Highway, Homewood)

Take a break from Thanksgiving prep or escape the house with visiting relatives at Mitchell & Michael’s Plat du Jour. Located along historic Dixie Highway in Homewood, this welcoming gem pairs a lively atmosphere with pure Southern comfort. Dig into plates of fried chicken, baked Cajun catfish, smothered pork chops and garlic rosemary lamb chops complete with holiday-worthy sides like candied yams, collard greens and mac n’ cheese. Cap off your meal with a signature cocktail and a slice of peach cobbler, and you’ve got all the indulgence of a holiday feast, with zero clean-up required.

Peachtree Cafe (4020 Lincoln Highway, Matteson)

Before the turkey goes in the oven, kick off your Thanksgiving celebration with brunch at Peachtree Cafe. Fill up on breakfast staples with a twist, like red velvet French toast, cinnamon apple crepes or bananas foster pancakes, or sample a skillet, like the Venetian, loaded with chicken breast, sautéed spinach, onions, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. Lunch items are also available, including the Matteson Delight, a roast beef sandwich smothered with peppers, onions, mushrooms and melted cheddar cheese on sourdough toast.

No matter where your appetite takes you this month, the Chicago Southland has a seat at the table waiting for you. Happy feasting!
