April Food Day is Going Strong

Tinley Park, Ill. – South-Southwest Suburban United Way’s (SSWUW) fifth annual April Food Day event is underway with the goal to raise over 115,000 pounds of food. Did you know that over 1.6 million people in Illinois are considered food insecure, 64% of whom do not qualify for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). While many individuals think of food pantries during the winter months, need is typically higher in spring and summer as donations decrease and supplies diminish.

The Chicago Southland hospitality industry has stepped up again to lead the way in SSWUW’s annual April Food Day. The Chicago Southland Convention & Visitors Bureau and 27 hotels, park districts and municipalities throughout the Chicago Southland region will be collecting food from now through April 7, 2017. “Last year’s goal of 30,000 pounds was exceeded and tripled by generating 90,000 pounds. There is no reason why we can’t meet or exceed the new goal of 115,000 pounds,” said Jim Garrett, President / CEO for the Chicago Southland CVB. “If everyone just took 15 minutes to drop off one or two items, think of the difference made in the lives of people all over the Chicago Southland.”
