Join other birders as we learn, explore and search for birds. This hike will highlight birds at Monee Reservoir’s varied habitat with water, fields and wooded areas. Late winter is a great time for bird-watching. With the leaves gone from the trees, it is easier to spot the birds. And even in the cold, the birds are still active. Bring your binoculars and favorite bird field guide. Participants will enjoy a hike of 1.5 to 2 miles on paved and natural surface trails across uneven terrain. Be sure to dress for the weather. Ages 16 or older. No registration required.

We are proud to have runners come from all over the world to participate in this event. The Southwest Half Marathon & 10K is designed to allow participants to run at their best with a flat, fast course with only 3 turns. The 1/2 mile Walk, Run or Roll, coordinated by the South West Special Recreation Association for children with special needs, will occur on the main course immediately after the Half Marathon and 10K runners have left the starting line. The final run will be the Kid’s Dash Fun Run, sponsored by Palos Health, and it will include short runs of several different lengths for several different age groups with the first age group beginning at 10:30am on the main course.

Monee Reservoir is your place for fishing this summer. Starting June 1 through August 31, we will award a prize for the biggest bass, catfish and pan fish by length. Bring your catch to the Visitor Center and we will measure, photograph and record your fish to enter you into the contest. Your photo will be included on the Monee Reservoir Big Fish Display in the Visitor Center. A name will be drawn from all entries so even if you don’t have the biggest fish, you still have a chance to win a prize. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is sponsoring free fishing days to help you do just that. One weekend in June has been set aside to sample the action without having to invest in a fishing license. We have also added our own incentives. On Friday, receive a voucher good for a free one-hour boat rental (excludes pedal boats). On Saturday, receive a box of night crawlers and, on Sunday, receive one free fishing pole rental. Regular rules and regulations still apply on rentals, such as a cash deposit and a valid driver’s license. District policies also still apply, such as size and quantity limits. Shoreline fishing and sidewalks are paved and easily accessible.

Kick off the summer in the outdoors with a fun night on the water with our half-price incentive. You’re invited to paddle in a kayak or canoe at Monee Reservoir and take a tour of the lake. Then, play some paddle Frisbee or beach ball on the water. Once the sun begins to fade, we’ll head back to shore to roast hot dogs and s’mores by fire. This is a recreational, non-instructional program. All equipment is provided. Participants should wear clothing that can get wet, including sturdy water shoes. Previous kayak/canoe experience is recommended. The launch area is easily accessible by a paved sidewalk from the parking lot. For ages 18-29.
