Get inspired by award-winning photographer Don Sala with almost 50 years of experience as a professional photographer, he is sure to give you new ideas for your next photo shoot. Then enjoy a hike with a naturalist in Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve as you take photos along the way; bring a camera (smartphone through digital SLR). The program will focus on technique and composition, not camera operation. Please dress for the weather; part of the program will take place outdoors. Indoor facilities are accessible; outdoor activities may take place on natural surfaces across uneven terrain. The hike may be 1-1.5 miles long.

This six-week beekeeping course will teach you all you need to know on how to become a successful beekeeper! Mike Rusnak, a member of the Will County Beekeepers Association, will use his 12 years of experience to lead you through the beekeeping process. The workshop fee includes the book “The Backyard Beekeeper” by Kim Flottum. Sessions include these presentations: Week 1 Familiarization: Introduction, History, Why Keep Honeybees, Resources, Cost Week 2 The Honeybee (Apis mellifera): Anatomy, Life Cycle, Castes, Jobs, Characteristics Week 3 Equipment and Stock: Hive Components, Tools, Location, Suppliers, Races Week 4 Management: Inspections, Pests, Parasites, Diseases, Feeding, Treatments Week 5 Colony Dynamics: Honey Production, Year in the Apiary, Winter Clustering, Temperature Regulation Week 6 Review, Examination and Course Feedback The program will take place indoors in an accessible facility. Weather permitting, an optional off-site field day will be planned to correspond with installation of a package of honeybees in a Langstroth hive. Registration required by Friday, February 16

From the earliest times, Native Americans and pioneers of the Midwest made maple syrup from the sweet sap of the sugar maple tree. Learn how it’s made, find sugar maple trees on site and try some real maple syrup. History has never been sweeter! While the majority of the program will take place inside, we will be outside on uneven terrain for a portion of the program. Hiking will be approximately .25 mile on preserve trails. Normally timid and elusive, the woodcock is readily observed during the early spring breeding season when he leaves the safety and cover of the forest to attract a mate. Spend the first part of the evening learning about the American woodcock, and then hike to watch for the courtship flight of the male. A short .25-mile walk to the viewing area will be on both paved and natural uneven surface trails. Please dress for the weather.
