From the earliest times, Native Americans and pioneers of the Midwest made maple syrup from the sweet sap of the sugar maple tree. Learn how it’s made, find sugar maple trees on site and try some real maple syrup. History has never been sweeter! While the majority of the program will take place inside, we will be outside on uneven terrain for a portion of the program. Hiking will be approximately .25 mile on preserve trails. MORNING BIRD HIKE Mar 9, 2019

Join other birders as we learn, explore and search for birds. This hike will highlight birds at Monee Reservoir’s varied habitat with water, fields and wooded areas. Late winter is a great time for bird-watching. With the leaves gone from the trees, it is easier to spot the birds. And even in the cold, the birds are still active. Bring your binoculars and favorite bird field guide. Participants will enjoy a hike of 1.5 to 2 miles on paved and natural surface trails across uneven terrain. Be sure to dress for the weather. As the sun sets, the male woodcock makes his way to the edge of a field and prepares for his extraordinary courtship performance. Normally timid and elusive, the woodcock is readily observed during the early spring breeding season when he leaves the safety and cover of the forest to attract a mate. Spend the first part of the evening discovering just how amazing this bird is, then hike to watch the courtship flight of the male. The hike is approximately 1 mile on both paved and natural surface trails over uneven terrain. Be sure to dress for the weather. For Ages 7 or older. No registration required.

“H2-WHOA!” is a fun, interactive exhibit that teaches visitors about what lies below the surface of their local water resources. Walk through and around a 10’ fabric dome to learn how flora and fauna, such as fresh water mussels and lichens, serve as indicator species. A hands-on, interactive station demonstrates how pollution and sediment have negative effects on fish and other animals. Learn how to contribute to water conservation efforts and answer a call to action to “Take the Pledge” to protect local water resources. The exhibition was organized by the Purdue Agriculture Exhibit Design Center, Purdue University, and is brought to the Forest Preserve through funding provided by The Nature Foundation of Will County.

Monee Reservoir will collect bicycles to donate to Working Bikes, an organization that will refurbish them for kids, individuals with disabilities, and families in developing countries to use for transportation. The bikes are redistributed to people locally, regionally and globally. Bikes can be in any condition: new or beyond repair. Be green – reduce, reuse, recycle! Let the Forest Preserve be an avenue to make that happen, especially to benefit someone in need.

Celebrate Earth Day by making a visit to Monee Reservoir and helping to keep the preserve free of trash. Fishing line, as well as other debris, poses serious threats to wildlife. Animals often become entangled in the line, or can swallow hooks or bits of plastic. Help keep the preserves clean. To participate, stop by the concessions window, pick up a trash bag and gloves, and fill the bag with any trash you collect. Bring the bag back to the concessions window and receive a free gift. Sidewalks are easily accessible; trails are on natural, uneven terrain.
