This six-week beekeeping course will teach you all you need to know on how to become a successful beekeeper! Mike Rusnak, a member of the Will County Beekeepers Association, will use his 12 years of experience to lead you through the beekeeping process. The workshop fee includes the book “The Backyard Beekeeper” by Kim Flottum. Sessions include these presentations: Week 1 Familiarization: Introduction, History, Why Keep Honeybees, Resources, Cost Week 2 The Honeybee (Apis mellifera): Anatomy, Life Cycle, Castes, Jobs, Characteristics Week 3 Equipment and Stock: Hive Components, Tools, Location, Suppliers, Races Week 4 Management: Inspections, Pests, Parasites, Diseases, Feeding, Treatments Week 5 Colony Dynamics: Honey Production, Year in the Apiary, Winter Clustering, Temperature Regulation Week 6 Review, Examination and Course Feedback The program will take place indoors in an accessible facility. Weather permitting, an optional off-site field day will be planned to correspond with installation of a package of honeybees in a Langstroth hive. Registration required by Friday, February 16

From the earliest times, Native Americans and pioneers of the Midwest made maple syrup from the sweet sap of the sugar maple tree. Learn how it’s made, find sugar maple trees on site and try some real maple syrup. History has never been sweeter! While the majority of the program will take place inside, we will be outside on uneven terrain for a portion of the program. Hiking will be approximately .25 mile on preserve trails.
