Whether Groundhog’s Day brings us an early spring or a longer winter, the Chicago Southland has events and activities for whichever decision Punxsutawney Phil makes. Check out some of the great happenings to enjoy!
Theatre and the arts
Koresh Dance Company Presents La Danse takes place on February 5 at the Moraine Valley Community College Fine & Performing Arts Center in Palos Hills. Experience a passionate and humorous interpretation of Matisse’s art. Enjoy An Evening of Irish Music and Song on February 12, full of classic Irish tunes. See Boy from February 26 to March 6, inspired by the true story of a 1960s well-intentioned doctor convincing the parents of a male infant to raise their son as a girl after an accident.
Check out 25 Years of Broadway and Beyond February 11-12 at Governors State University Center for Performing Arts in University Park, where the GSU Dance Company will be paying tribute to groundbreaking Broadway musicals from throughout the years. You can also see Breach of Peace on February 22, a one-man play about the remarkable men and women of all backgrounds who stood for equal treatment of all.
Tall Glass Arts Association in Park Forest will be holding 2022 Capturing Nature until February 26. See art that ranges from sprawling landscapes to close-ups of flowers and birds.
Kids Improvable on February 18 at the Cultural Center in Orland Park features 11–18-year-old comics putting on an improv show you won’t forget.
See Doubt at The Drama Group in Chicago Heights from February 18-27. Doubt is a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning drama about suspicion, faith, power and compassion.
The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra will be holding their Still, Bologne & Dvorak concert on February 19 at the Trinity Christian College Ozinga Chapel in Palos Heights. At Freedom Hall on February 22 you can see Crooners, a cabaret show featuring songs from the 1940s-50s. Stop by on February 25 for Better Together Presents the Jazz Soul of Ray Charles, a night of music guaranteed to move your soul and feet.
For the kids
On February 5, take your kids out to the Bombie the Abominable Snowman Hunt at the Messenger Woods Nature Preserve in Homer Glen. Sing songs and go on a short, adventurous hike in search of “Bombie,” then make s’mores over a campfire.
Enjoy Nature Play Day: Woodchucks on February 9 at the Plum Creek Nature Center in Beecher. Geared towards 3–5-year-olds, look for signs of woodchucks around the nature center and enjoy both outdoor and indoor activities. Register by February 8!
Head on over to the Father Daughter Fairytale at the Worth Park District in Worth on February 19 to dance the night away with a DJ, get your face painted and enjoy refreshments and food. Be sure to call ahead at 708-448-7080 for the reservation discount!
All age nature fun
From the warmth of your home, enjoy Birding In The Preserves (Zoom Webinar) from the Forest Preserve District of Will County, where you can learn about great birding spots at a nearby preserve.
Meet A Beekeeper at the Plum Creek Nature Center in Beecher on February 6 and get the opportunity to ask questions and get insights into beekeeping from a 15-year expert. You can also stop by on February 19 for Excursion Hike: Plum Creek Greenway Trail for a day full of outdoor exercise and Norwegian philosophy. Register by February 17!
Head out to the Monee Reservoir in Monee for a Morning Bird Hike on February 12. On this hike, you’ll get the chance to see some great bird spotting locations up close and personal.
